Saint Michael's College Book Award for Academic Achievement & Social Conscience

This year's book is the autobiography Lulu in the Sky: A Daughter of Cambodia Finds Love, Healing, and Double Happiness, written by Saint Michael's alumna Loung Ung '93.

We are excited to have your school participate in the Saint Michael's College Book Award program!

Please review all of the following information about this year's Book Award scholarship program.

    How to Nominate Students

Our Book Award is intended to highlight individuals who exhibit the characteristics of an ideal Saint Michael's student. We invite you to nominate eligible juniors for this award based on:

    • Academic Achievement - students attain mostly A's and B's in honors, AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment classes and are likely inductees of the National Honor Society or equivalent honors organization
    • Social Conscience - students show a sustained and sincere commitment to community service, issues of peace and justice and concern for others

Please note that all schools are eligible to nominate two current students in their junior year (graduating in 2024) that they feel best fit these characteristics.

We can only process nominations that contain all of the information listed on our nomination form. This ensures that the students you nominate are marked and reviewed for the Book Award Scholarship should they choose to apply to Saint Michael's College. Without the information on this form we can not guarantee they will receive the correct scholarship. If you have any questions regarding how we use the student information you provide us please contact the Book Award Committee at 802.654.3000, or bookaward@smcvt.edu.

    Award Presentation

We do not require that this award be presented to students at a ceremony. If your school holds an awards ceremony we encourage you to present the Saint Michael’s College Book Award at that time. If your award ceremony is held in the fall, we ask that you present the student(s) with the award prior to summer vacation to ensure that they will not be surprised when they receive information regarding the Book Award Scholarship opportunities over the summer.

Award recipients will be presented with the autobiography Lulu in the Sky: A Daughter of Cambodia Finds Love, Healing, and Double Happiness, written by Saint Michael's alumna Luong Ung '93. She exemplifies that at St. Mike’s we combine our belief in the power of peace, justice, and service, with a will to act. Driven by our values, we begin to understand humankind and cultivate human kindness. Loung is a writer, human rights activist, and national spokesperson for the Campaign for a Landmine-Free World. You are welcome to read more about this book selection on our website.

If you have any concerns about presenting this book to your students please contact us at bookaward@smcvt.edu.
